What is an Eating Disorder?

A teen eating disorder is a serious mental health condition characterized by abnormal eating habits that negatively impact physical health and emotional well-being. Common types include:

  • Teen Anorexia – marked by severe food restriction and fear of weight gain.
  • Teen Bulimia – involving binge eating followed by purging.
  • Binge Eating in Teens – where large amounts of food are consumed uncontrollably without compensatory behaviors.

These disorders often stem from a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors, affecting self-esteem and daily functioning in adolescents.

Common Symptoms of Teenage Eating Disorders

Recognizing the signs early is crucial for intervention. Common symptoms of eating disorders in teens include:

These symptoms can indicate disordered eating in teenagers and require professional assessment to prevent long-term health complications.

Diagnosing an adolescent eating disorder involves a comprehensive evaluation by mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists or therapists specializing in eating issues. The process typically includes a detailed clinical interview to assess eating habits, body image perceptions, and medical history, often using criteria from the DSM-5.

Physical exams, blood tests, and nutritional assessments help rule out medical causes and evaluate health impacts. Input from parents, school reports, or self-assessments may reveal patterns like restrictive eating or binge-purge cycles. Early diagnosis is key, as untreated conditions can lead to severe complications.

Our approach includes:

Nutritional Counseling

Working with registered dietitians to develop balanced meal plans and restore healthy eating patterns.

Regular health check-ups to address physical complications and ensure safe weight restoration if needed.

Peer Support

Providing a supportive environment where teenagers can share experiences, connect with peers, and learn from one another.

Family Involvement

Including families in the treatment process to enhance understanding, communication, and support at home.

Therapeutic Interventions

Engaging in evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to address distorted thought patterns and behaviors related to food and body image.

Educational Support

Work with the teen's school to create an environment that supports their recovery, including accommodations if necessary.

We focus on teenage eating disorder treatment to promote lasting recovery and well-being.

The duration of teen eating disorder treatment varies based on the disorder’s severity, type, and individual response. Outpatient programs may last 3-6 months with weekly sessions, while residential treatment for severe cases like teen anorexia or teen bulimia could extend 1-3 months or more.

Full recovery often requires ongoing support for 6-12 months to a year, including therapy and nutritional follow-up. At Hillside Horizon for Teens, we monitor progress and adjust plans, emphasizing relapse prevention for sustained health.
