How Long Is Residential Treatment For Teens?

Most residential treatment for teens at Hillside Horizon runs 60 to 90 days. Some teens finish closer to 30 days and a few need longer, because discharge follows progress instead of a set date.

What Is The Difference Between A 30, 60, And 90 Day Stay?

Stays here run 30 to 90 days, and most land between 60 and 90. The longer stays leave time to practice new skills in daily life, at school, and in family therapy before the move home.

The length is reviewed as treatment goes, so a stay is not fixed at admission.

What Changes From The First Week To The Final Weeks?

Each part of a stay has its own work, and the team plans the next part with you.

Weeks one and two
Safety, a steady daily rhythm, and a treatment plan built around your teen. Calls home begin in week two.
The middle weeks
Individual therapy several times a week, skills groups, family therapy every week, and school on site.
The final weeks
A practice weekend home, a clear next treatment team, and a discharge plan built with you.

Who Decides When A Teen Is Ready For Discharge?

The clinical team decides with you, based on progress rather than a date picked at admission. Your teen's treatment plan is reviewed as their progress changes.

Families take part in discharge planning through family therapy and the practice weekend home.

How Does Insurance Review A Residential Stay?

Many plans approve residential treatment in blocks of days, then review progress before approving more, a step called utilization review or concurrent review.

If your plan approves less time than the team recommends, admissions can talk through the options with you, including an appeal or self-pay. Benefits vary by plan.

Many families step down to our outpatient program or our virtual IOP, with a team that already knows your teen. We also check in at 30, 60, and 90 days after discharge.

FAQ

Length Of Stay Questions

Short answers about how long a stay lasts. If yours is not here, call and a person will pick up.

What if my teen needs longer than 90 days?

A few teens need longer, and the team plans the extra time with you based on progress. Your plan's review process applies to the added days, and benefits vary by plan.

Is a 30 day stay enough?

Some teens finish closer to 30 days. Most stays here run 60 to 90 days, because new skills take time to practice in daily life.

Does insurance cover the whole stay?

Plans that cover residential treatment usually review the stay as it goes rather than approving all of it at once. Your free benefits check shows how your plan works.

How long does virtual IOP last after residential?

A typical virtual IOP course runs eight to twelve weeks. It may run longer when your teen is stepping down from residential care.

Can families visit during a longer stay?

Yes. Family visits and participation days happen throughout the stay, along with family therapy every week.
