What Happens On Intake Day?

Parents or legal guardians are encouraged to be at intake to share history and support the first hours. A detailed packing list is provided when your teen is admitted.

Many teens do not choose to come, and we plan for that. Motivational interviewing runs from week one to help your teen find a reason that is truly their own.

What to bring
Comfortable clothing, hygiene products, prescribed medications in their original packaging, and ID and insurance information.
What to leave home
Drugs, alcohol, weapons, and anything that would disrupt treatment. Some electronics may be restricted.

What Are The First Two Weeks Like?

The first two weeks focus on safety, a steady daily rhythm, and a treatment plan built around your teen, with no pressure for a quick breakthrough.

Calls with your teen begin in week two, when the clinical team says it is time.

What Does A Day Look Like In Residential Treatment?

School starts at 9:00 a.m., therapy runs from 11:00 a.m., and recreation follows at 4:00 p.m. Our in-house chef prepares lunch and dinner each day, and staff are in the house overnight.

Individual therapy several times a week, skills groups, and experiential therapies such as art, music, and yoga fill the week alongside school. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) teach coping skills your teen practices in daily life in the house.

How Is Residential Care Different From A Therapeutic Boarding School?

A therapeutic boarding school is mainly a school with support built in, while residential care is a clinical level of care for a mental health need. At Hillside Horizon therapy leads the day, and school runs on site with Advantages School International.

How Do Parents Stay Connected?

Family involvement is part of the plan, not an add-on, and parents and caregivers have a set role from the first week.

Parents join family therapy every week, in person or over secure video, along with coaching on what to change at home. You also get written updates every week and a care coordinator you can reach.

We schedule family visits and participation days with clinical staff in the room, and families can tour the homes by appointment through admissions.

What Happens With School?

School runs on site with Advantages School International, and its Cognia-accredited coursework can transfer back to your teen's home school. Send a current transcript and class schedule so your teen is placed in the right classes.

Will My Teen Need Medication?

Not every teen does. Psychiatry and medication management are available when the clinical team recommends them, under our Medical Director, Alejandro Alva, M.D.

How Do Discharge And Aftercare Work?

Discharge is planned around progress and a clear next treatment team, which may include our outpatient program or our virtual intensive outpatient program (IOP). You practice the first weekend home before discharge, so the move back is planned with the team instead of rushed.

After discharge, we check in at 30, 60, and 90 days.

FAQ

What Parents Ask About The First Weeks

Short answers to what families ask before admission. If yours is not here, call and a person will pick up.

How long does residential treatment last?

Most stays run 60 to 90 days. Some finish closer to 30, and a few need longer, because we discharge on progress instead of a set date.

Is the program locked?

No. Our homes are not a locked ward, and staff are in the house 24 hours a day.

Can my teen keep their phone?

Some electronics may be restricted during the stay, and a full list is sent before admission. Phone use is one of the things families practice before discharge.

Who is on my teen's care team?

Clinical care is led by Alejandro Alva, M.D., our Medical Director, and Stacia Ponce-Rodriguez, LMFT, our Clinical Director. Therapists, case managers, and LVN nurses work alongside them.

Can we visit during the stay?

Yes. Beyond weekly family therapy we schedule family visits and participation days, with clinical staff in the room.
